Therapy Groups After School

Would you like WPCS to provide after school programming at your school? We are currently running an 8 week 45 minute group therapy program. During the 8 weeks, students will learn how to identify their feelings, define difference between feelings express feelings using I Statements and learn way to cope with feelings and track their moods.

A group setting is a perfect way to teach feelings and introduce children to therapy. Groups are small (7-10 children) are centered around exploring Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) Skills

WHAT IS DBT?

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy also know as DBT provides clients with new skills to manage painful emotions and decrease conflict in relationships. DBT specifically focuses on providing therapeutic skills in four key areas. First, mindfulness focuses on improving an individual’s ability to accept and be present in the current moment. Second, distress tolerance is geared toward increasing a person’s tolerance of negative emotion, rather than trying to escape from it. Third, emotion regulation covers strategies to manage and change intense emotions that are causing problems in a person’s life. Fourth, interpersonal effectiveness consists of techniques that allow a person to communicate with others in a way that is assertive, maintains self-respect, and strengthens relationships.

What’s Unique About Dialectical Behavioral Therapy?

The term “dialectical” comes from the idea that bringing together two opposites in therapy — acceptance and change — brings better results than either one alone.

A unique aspect of DBT is its focus on acceptance of a client’s experience as a way for therapists to reassure them — and balance the work needed to change negative behaviors.
